Part of the Type series which explores creative use of typography.

Veil comprises various photos of gravestones taken from a local cemetery and places them in the same 6x9 grid as the Alters piece (since it covers similar metaphysical themes). Each square corresponding to an individual alter (or consciousness/identity) of a mind-at-large.

The piece also plays upon the theory filter of consciousness in which William James, considered the father of psychology, hypothesised that the brain filters our access to a vast consciousness. Research studies indicate that experiences of expanded consciousness can occur when the brain is inactive or minimally active, as occurs in near-death experiences, energy healing, or deep meditative states. At such times, the filter becomes thinner, and we can experience the expanded consciousness that is usually blocked. Perhaps in death, the filter dissipates completely, and our individual consciousness becomes one with the expanded consciousness.

The single black square represents a dead pixel, the abyss and the unknowable. It also reflects a hole in the filter (or veil), through which we can experience the full gamut of wider awareness... but in order to do so we have to pass through the veil of death.
